One minute it was still 2022, and now, a quarter past 2023. To be fair, I haven't really been posting much. I mean, how many people really read blogs these days, right? I'm usually found on Instagram where I'm more current and posting regularly.

So, quick recap! In September of last year, Raq, was released. This novel had taken me quite some time to finally finish. And I'm glad I did as it has received such incredibly great reviews.

Before I knew it, 2022 had ended, and I was neck deep into finalising The Dark Without. In March 2023, I finally released this twisty, bendy, every-which-way novel, and again, to some very great reviews.

RAQ

THE DARK WITHOUT

What else? Well... The decision to go wide. So, after cancelling my Draft 2 Digital (D2D) account a few years ago, I rejoined to they can handle the wider distribution of all my books, paperbacks included. Of course, this means that I can no longer be enrolled with Kindle Unlimited, so, it's a bit of a blow as many of my "sales" are through the KU page reads. But, it's time to spread out farther afield and see what it has to offer me.

Think that's about it for now. Also, do people still read blogs?

Anyway, quick catch up. Mostly the two releases I had this year. The first one is Grosjean, a sci-fi romp with a space pirate everyone thought to be dead. This book was stewing and simmering for a very long time! Since 2011, the seeds of this book started on the heels of me completing The Lancaster Trilogy, and at first, I wanted it to be a sequel to the trilogy. But that didn't happen. I did keep some elements of the Lancaster world, in small, tucked away mentions, but Grosjean is a story all of its own!

Grosjean

Then, months later, we have Raq. This is another story that I've been working on, since 2012. Raq originally came out as a short story in an anthology collection called, Slayers. But I'd always wanted to make this into a full-length. For many years, I picked it up, then put it down. I honestly didn't know where or which direction to take with the story. But slowly, the framework started to take shape, and I ploughed on, moulding it to what it is now. I am thoroughly pleased with the way it turned out. Raq is unlike most of my books, where the action and thrills are visceral and wild. This book is a more introspective, philosophical and character-driven story.

Raq

What's next for me? <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">The seeds of this story actually started Christmas 2011, but it wasn't until the following year that I decided it needed to be written. After many drafts, oh, let's round it off at seven...or was it eight, and many beta reads and edits, even a couple of rewrites, Bengaria's War finally came together into something I was happy with, my editor was happy with, and hopefully, my readers are happy with.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">After eight years, it is now released for all the world to see. To say it's been a frustrating, sometimes depressing ordeal getting this particular book together is an understatement. I have fought many internal battles trying to convince myself that this book was worth all the effort, and financial resources, I had put into it. Many times I'd considered shelving it altogether. But at the back of my mind, I knew it needed more, it needed finishing. And by finishing, it meant an overhaul, a thorough polishing, and scrapping out all the unnecessary bits (akin to cleaving out bits of your soul). I am now finally happy with the results, and I could not have done it without my editor, Laurel. She get's me. She get's my writing. And she is amazing to work with. Thank you so much! And of course, my formatter, Write into Print. The amazing Stef wields magicky stuff to create shiny, professional ebook and paperback files, giving my books the proper spa treatments it needs to shine. Thank you!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">To my readers, enjoy!

Like most writers, I have a slush pile of countless story ideas and half-written attempts of many new stories. A great deal of them, end up being redirect as shorts or bits of flash fiction (which I'm still sorting through). This short story collection contains works from 2012 to 2019. A few were destined to be great big novels that had been altered and pared down until it ended up being a short story. Others were created for the sole purpose of being included in other short story anthologies (only one made it). While it's only five tales, they are each unique in their own right, taking you to a different setting and world.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It only took about five years or so to finally re-edit and re-brand this trilogy and get it back out there. I hacked away quite a bit of fluff, tightened up a lot of areas, added in a little bit more there and there, but in the end, thanks to my keen-eyed editor, we managed to produce these shiny new products.
It's like giving up a part of your soul to make Horcruxes.

So, here we go. I've signed up with Thunderclap to help share Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin with everyone, everywhere, across the universe. All I need is a little, tweeny-weeny, bit of help from you. Don't worry, it's not that hard, but it will help spread Jax Marlin and her incredible world that much further.

Thunderclap is a new tool that allows people to pledge a Tweet, Facebook post, or Tumblr post that will be posted along with all other supporters' messages at the same time. Like a massive flash mob on social media. It's completely secure, free, and will post a single one-time message on your behalf on April 10. All it takes is ONE CLICK (choose from either Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr options). I have until April 10 to get 100 supporters! If not, alas, no flash mob for me. *sniff*

It takes 5 seconds to join. Here is the link: JAX MARLIN on THUNDERCLAP

So there you go. Easy peasy!
Thanks to everyone in advance.
Cheers!
I did. Where the hell did 2016 go? Seriously.

I spent most of last year in a sort of weird fug. Aimless, adrift, muttering WTF many times to myself (and not in the abbreviated way). My writing, for the first half sort of fizzled and disintegrated and I sat in a daze wondering what to do next. All my contracts with the publishers had come to an end. My books were back at me and just sitting there staring at me.

It had been an goal of mine to re-edit the Lancaster Trilogy for some time, so I started tackling them in order. It consumed most of 2016. When I wasn't doing that, I went back, headfirst and with blinders on, back to my painting. I painted and painted and it kind of revived me. Focused me on what to do next.

Self-publishing, the ultimate goal.

The latter half of 2016 was me just diving in and ploughing on. Mapping out a plan, a course of action, checking off my to-do list and (amazingly) getting through. It gave me hope that 2017 was going to be the year I take flight and publish on my ownsome.

And now here we are. 2017. January is almost done and I've checked off more stuff on that list. One of them, to re-release the Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin novel with a shiny rebrand and teeny title change. As of this morning, I'd checked of yet another item on the list: Upload Marlin to Kindle. Check!

So there you have, folks. In a few days, my book will go live again! Stay tuned. 2017 will be a rollercoaster ride!

Cheers!TK Toppinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00192845664117376346noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-756429799959426939.post-70237100141545748032015-12-31T08:12:00.000-05:002015-12-31T08:12:05.067-05:00That Time Of Year Again...Wow. The end of the year is upon us once again. Each time, I make mention that time has flown by far too quickly, like just now. Might as well be consistent, right?

I've been extremely tardy with the whole blogging thing of late. Life just gets in the way of a bunch of things, and each time I think about something to blog about, something else interrupts. To say that 2015 has been a year of distractions and high-speed flying wrenches, is an understatement. Aside from an increase in my workload (good thing), family commitments (somewhat good) and personal issues (not so good), the year was also a great big umpfff... It had a strange way of sucking the cheer out of you. If you're one to follow the Chinese horoscope, 2015, the Goat Year, just head-butted, ass-kicked, and bahhh'd the crap out of this bewildered Rooster girl. Man, I cannot wait to see the back end of this year. But then, Monkey Year comes along and I hope it doesn't completely kerfuffle me. It tends to do that...dang these celestial animals.

Well, my 2016 plate hasn't changed much since 2015, or 2014. That's how uninspiring the year has been. I still have rollover writing projects and commitments to complete, and I'm still trying to finish that beast of a story, Bengaria's War. At least it has gone through one round of professional edits. Still far from complete, and far from over. But, let's hope I feel an inspiring burst of energy and some kind of uplifting wind fills my sails. The further I get from 2015, the better.

But enough about my crappy year! Here's hoping everyone out there has a healthy, calm, productive and inspiring 2016.

Cheers!TK Toppinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00192845664117376346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-756429799959426939.post-48163765053779247012015-09-02T06:00:00.000-04:002015-09-02T06:00:00.650-04:00Introducing Max Fragg - New Book Release by S.A. It didn't help he was driving the car when it happened. But in a world where dreams become reality, can nightmares be far behind?

They had no idea what he had in store for them. He almost felt sorry. Almost. He watched as Travis stroked Debbie's hand and whispered something in her ear. Maxx locked eyes with her as he moved across the apartment. He saw the desperation mixed with fear in her eyes and he grinned. He liked it that way. Pulling a pair of gloves from his belt, Maxx cinched them tight around his wrists. The rush of adrenaline rose up from his chest. This was far from his first job but he still got a thrill each time. He clicked off the lamp and the room went black.

I've been sporadically tweaking The Lancaster Trilogy (it never is finished, is it?) and had Bengaria's War edited (but I still haven't had the time or the right frame of mind to tackle the edits), Episode 8 in the Jax Marlin series is about a quarter way done, but far from finished, I hacked out a brand new story idea that seems to be stealing my attention with beguiling winks, and yet another buried WIP is beckoning me back with sultry looks. Oh, the conundrums!

Aside from all those piled up on my plate, my day job workload has seen a sudden upturn, distracting me yet again, so time to write or get in the right groove for writing is just a flustering experience. And then daily life just loves to interrupt and laugh at you all the time. I must say, 2015 has been (so far), one distracting, unfocused, soul-sucking year. My productivity is like -3 when it should be somewhere in the +5 region. All the plans and checklist items I'd mapped out for this year has been shoved aside and I'm just making it up as I go along. To say I'm so ready for 2015 to get over itself, is an understatement.

But anyways, with another five months to plough through, I'm hoping to complete at least two things on my to-do-list. At least...

So, there is my update. Back to the daily grind then...

Cheers!TK Toppinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00192845664117376346noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-756429799959426939.post-2209647767525018882015-03-13T08:56:00.001-04:002015-03-13T08:56:26.860-04:00Flash FictionHere's a little piece I did a couple years ago, specially for the Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday blog hop around. That's #SFFS for those not in the know.

Anyways, for lack of things to offer for the blog roll event, I came up with my first rambling, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants, piece of flash-pulpy fiction. Dosed with cheesy sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal (I think), it's a full-filled romp of adventure, action and comedy. Who doesn't love that, right?

The other day, I finished it up, cleaned it up some, gave it a title (Stop, Drop, Roll...And Run For Your Life), slapped together a cover and uploaded it. So, if you want to have a chuckle, stop by my Wattpad page and have a read. Come on, it's only 1,500 words. Leave a comment if you like, give it a like too if you want.

And enjoy!
Weeks after helping Special Inspector Pedroni sort through his demons, Jax Marlin is still hiding, reluctant to conquer her own monster and face the world. As Christmas 2400 descends, Pedroni waits for Jax in growing despair, battling the crowds shopping for gifts and having cappuccinos with his elderly neighbour. Meanwhile Jax procrastinates, but learns of the kidnapping of a young girl. She soon realizes the girl is someone she knows, and if ever she needed a kick-start, this is it. As she chases the scent of the kidnappers, Jax finds herself entrenched in tropical sunshine and briny ocean breezes, and Pedroni eagerly abandons shopping to give chase once more. Can Jax save the kidnapped girl? Will Pedroni finally capture his vigilante? But not all is as it seems, and not all that need saving need it.
Though I saw it fast approaching as we careened into December, January 2015 barrelled into me at the speed of light. But, as I stand on wobbly legs, life must forge onwards and it's not for the lazy (damn). There's things to be done!

Like all starts to a brand new year, I've made my list of things to do. Not resolutions, I've resolved not to do that any more. Who follows them anyways, right? Exactly.

Before the new year had a chance to gag me with it's exhaust fumes, I cracked back open that beastly work in progress, Bengaria's War. It will be released this year, without fail. To date, it's been through five reviews (ok, six, but who's counting) and several betas and I'm now feeling (fairly) confident to give birth to it. The contractions have started...

My quest now is to search for a suitable editor that will assist me during the labour pains.

My next quest will be to design the cover. That's the easy part (being a graphic artist does help).

And then...I suppose I need to get back into the muck and tackle The Lancaster Trilogy again. And somewhere in there, complete some more Marlin short stories.

That should keep me busy for six months, right? But don't worry, I'll try not to be a stranger again to this whole blogging thing.

Cheers!TK Toppinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00192845664117376346noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-756429799959426939.post-41762963227445747892014-12-29T07:25:00.000-05:002014-12-29T07:25:00.019-05:00It's Been Like Forever...I know, right? I can't remember the last time I've posted on this blog. Oh, wait...six months ago! I think that's a bit too long a stretch between posts, don't you?

So, what's been up with me? Well, all sorts of things, and all sorts of nothings. To say I've fallen into your typical writer's slump is but an understatement. Honestly, I've not written anything new since my last post back in June. But don't despair, I have been fixing some of my writing, so, not completely out of the writing game. Then of course I've been juggling with my graphic arts day job, and life's demands to be social and entertaining with live humans around me, taking the annual holiday, then, whaddaya know -- it's Christmas time and all sorts of distractions bombard you!

To recap, since I've gotten the rights to my Lancaster Trilogy books back from the publishers in April, I've been attacking them and hacking away to make them a more solid read. That means re-editing them and tweaking the weak areas and hopefully fix the issues I had with it the first time around. Hopefully. It's a huge task, but I'm determined to finish it. Stay tuned. Once I've gotten them properly edited after I've mucked about with them, I'll be ready to push them out again.

Well...umm...That basically has been taking up most of my time. And my OCD tendencies won't allow me to continue on with anything else until it's done.

Anyways, in a couple days, 2014 comes to an end. I can't say it's been an amazing year (writing wise), but it's been a year of re-focusing and re-directing my goals as a writer. I look forward to 2015 with new focus and hopefully get to achieve all I've set out to do. Here's hoping everyone else has an amazing 2015!!

Cheers!
Hunter to talk about my main character. For those who don't know, currently, my main character is a charismatic vigilante that goes by the name of Jax Marlin. Let me introduce you to her...

1. What is the name of your main character? Is she/he fictional or a historical person?

Jax Marlin is most definitely all made up. She is a vigilante, a path she chose from very early on in her young life. It's her calling.

2. When and where is the story set?

The story is set 300 years in our future. I quite like that era, and I've already done another story in that time, so you can say I'm quite familiar with it. In this future, we've got amazing gadgets and technology, there's space travel (of course!), humongous space stations scattered throughout the galaxy, and space pirates (some of which are really good friends with Jax). In the Marlin short story series, I've have the opportunity to scatter the storylines throughout the world and into space. Makes for such fun writing!

3. What should we know about her?

Jax is a complex person. She's a mixture of characters/personalities all balled up into one. For one thing, seeing someone do bad riles her up. Yet, she'd do anything, even something worse to stop the bad thing from happening without thinking twice. She's a confident woman, smart and well-educated, a techno-geek, an expert at martial arts, but in an instant, real, crippling fear can plague her, cutting her down to an insecure mess. Jax has her own demons, especially the one inside her, that she must fight and control. She also has tendency to be obsessive-compulsive, has a wicked sweet-tooth and unhealthy appetite for junk food, but is also disciplined enough to perform her daily exercise regime without fail. She's cold, calculated, ruthless, determined, has a wicked sense of humour, and walks around with the self-assured knowledge that if you want something done right, you do it yourself. And, as if she didn't already have a complex personality to deal with and all the troubles that brings, she's fallen madly and insensibly in love with the one person that can destroy her, an inspector chasing her. Of course, Special Inspector Pedroni has also fallen for her charms...

4. What is the main conflict?

While each short story, coming off from the main novel, To Catch A Marlin, has its own set of conflicts and story arc, the main conflict throughout the entire series is the fact that Jax has fallen for the cop that's chasing her -- and he's in the same boat. There is much resistance at the thought of falling in love with a cop, everything inside her resists the very notion. As the storyline progresses, we see how she (they both) deal with it.

5. What is the personal goal of the character?

To stop bad things from happening to good people. Plain and simple. And how to have a happily ever after despite the life she's chosen. As Jax sees it, it's a tough life, but someone's gotta do it. As much as she wants her own happily ever after, she knows what she must sacrifice in order to fight crime.

6. What is the significance of the title of your book?

The main novel, To Catch A Marlin, well, that pretty much speaks for itself (of course, some might confuse it with a book of fishing...I may have to rethink it and relabel). The subsequent shorts since each have a catchy name, relevant to the storyline in the tale.

7. When can we expect the book to be published?

To Catch A Marlin is already out and available at Amazon. You can find the short stories (so far) all listed on my Author Page. So far, there are only 6 shorts completed in the projected 10. So keep checking back!

Well, this has been fun! Next up is Patrick Stutzman. Also, click back, too, to see what characters came before.

Cheers!
Get immersed in the Nogiku world with Jiro Itō as he gets ready for a boring and annoying New Year’s Eve out in Nishikyō. At least, that’s what he expects his night to be like. Jiro would rather drink with the geisha all evening, and avoid taking anyone home, but he has family business to attend to instead. So, it's been a while since I just rambled off and spilled the contents of my brain onto this blog. To be honest, I've been a little scattered and busy with writing projects and trying to make sure I've accomplished stuff on my 'to do' list. And then, as per usual, life interrupts and throws everything out of whack.

Anyhoo. So here's a little update on what's up with TK.
On the writing front, a new Jax Marlin novella was just released over the Easter weekend. Titled The Edge of the Blade, this is #6 in the Marlin short story series. I've just completed #7, The Angel of Mercy, and it's currently with my beta readers. Three more shorts to go in order to complete the 10-series. I'm getting there.

And now, some bigger news. Since signing on with Champagne Books Group in 2009 and releasing the Lancaster Trilogy with them, I've decided it was time to move on. Believe me, the decision was not made lightly, especially after the lengthy ordeal of submissions and queries and the usual heart-wrenching stuff every writer must go through. And, I'm sure most new writers will agree, a publishing deal is a big deal. It's like a sort of validation that your work is good enough to be (even) considered worthy of publishing (this applies to getting an agent as well).

I've been with CBG for five years and in those five years, I've grown and have a better understanding of the literary world. I've learned loads, and it's through my association with them that I was able to do so. For that, I'm forever grateful.

With the rights back since the end of last month, I've been furiously tweaking some aspects of the the first novel (my debut) that I've been wanting to do. As a writer, I've grown, and the way I write now is a little different from how I used to write. While I debated whether or not to change certain aspects of it, in the end, the quality of the work is what mattered most to me, as well as the content. So, without ruining the overall storyline, I've been dealing with issues that were bothering me. Point of view shifts, a lot of passive voice sentences, that sort of thing. The end result, I'm hoping, will be a stronger, tighter, and better structured novel. Once I've done so, I'm going to dig into the other two in the trilogy and tidy them up as well.

In the end, I'd like to rebrand each, release again to the world, and this time, try the self-publishing route. Wish me luck.

And then, onto more writing projects that I've been keeping warm on the backburner. The monster novel (not real monsters) Bengaria's War still needs my attention. Another epicky novel is (I have a title for it now!) The Acquisition of the Levi. There are various other short stories as well, Time Fracture being one of them.

This month, if I'm correct, also marks the release of another short in an anthology collection. I shall keep you posted on that.

And then, on the personal front, lots of interruptions, mostly good and fun. Except right now where I have some serious plumbing issues. Old pipes leaking, then leaking through the walls and dripping ominously through a crack very similar to the crack in Dr. Who...scary. Of course, with old pipes, they tend to be very unpredictable...so in the end, we decided to let the plumber just rip them all out and lay down some new ones. So, two bathrooms are piled high with broken masonry and tiles, dust and grit and whatnots, not to mention the multiple holes (ginormous craters) in the walls. Oh, and the constant flow of strangers tramping through the house, with power drills, hammers, etc...and dust. So much dust. Hopefully by the weekend we'll have our bathroom back (at least) so we can actually have a proper shower. Garden hose shower's while sounds fun the first time, get's a little old the second time around.

And that, in a nutshell, is what's up with me.TK Toppinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00192845664117376346noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-756429799959426939.post-83965998865455374292014-04-23T08:57:00.000-04:002014-04-23T08:57:05.472-04:00My Latest Interview...Stopped by fellow Sci-Fi writer, S.A. Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday (SFFSat) is a place where a bunch of us post snippets from our written works and also shoot the breeze a little. And before I get ahead of myself, thanks and appreciation as always to those who stop by and leave fantastic comments.

Wow, it's been quite a while since I last signed up for SFFSat. Busy reading, writing and living and trying to make more time to do those things. On the reading front, I've been ploughing through my reading list. On the writing front, I've been focusing mainly on finishing the Jax Marlin series. Just 3 more short stories to go to complete the 10-series. Getting there. On the living front, I've been diving straight in, tuning out social media and tuning into live media. Meaning, actual humans around me. Wow, I think social media is much easier. Haha! Anyways, if I can't get to read everyone else's snippets this weekend, it's because I'm busy (live media-ing) babysitting the nephews and may need a couple days of recovery after. :) But I hope everyone enjoys my offering...

This snippet comes from THE EDGE OF THE BLADE, #6 in the To Catch a Marlin short story series. It's scheduled for release April 18.

In this snippet, we have our favourite vigilante watching as her copper, Pedroni, has a private moment dealing with an issue. As Jax stands guard, giving Pedroni some space, they are surrounded by a group of junkies.
