SFFSat - July 07

Welcome to another SFFSat, where a bunch of us post snippets from our written works and shoot the breeze.  Thanks also to everyone who stops by and leaves awesome comments.  Much appreciated!

Today, I'm featuring another short from To Catch A Marlin, this one titled, The Marlin Strikes Again. If you're interested in more from Jax Marlin, the recently released Ring of Fire Short Story Sampler Vol. 1, is available on Kindle.

For those out of the loop, To Catch A Marlin is a futuristic cat and mouse tale between Special Inspector Pedroni and the vigilante Jax Marlin, who just happens to be a super sexy woman with ninja skills.

In this scene, Jax is following a rather nasty target and has just stepped out of a coffee shop and made a distressing observation...

The street assaulted her with a sharp bite of cold.  Spring promised to be in the air, but it seemed winter hadn’t gotten the memo yet.  Either that, or Weather Control had fallen asleep on its own ass again.  She screwed up her rosebud mouth and pulled her long coat around her, deciding she didn’t like this city.  For a university town touted for its forward thinking 24th century lifestyle, it struck her as backward as hell.  Crime, the disgusting kind, ran rampant within it and no one seemed to take notice.  Or if they did, they didn’t seem to care.  She might as well have been back home, in London.

If you're interested in participating in next week's SFF Saturday, stop by their sign-up blog which is open every Wednesdays.  And don't forget to follow the rules and use the #SFFSat hashtag.

Thanks for stopping by!

Cheers!

  1. Disgusting crime? As opposed to cute and cuddly crime? Anyway, from this description, I have to agree with Jax. This new city seems like a drag.

    1. Hee hee. Yep, Jax has a way of categorizing crimes to suit her vigilante purposes. Some, she turns a blind eye too (I suppose, the cute and cuddly kinds.) :)

  2. I hate it when university towns becomes crime-ridden. It makes studying that much more difficult. At the same time, the night life is sure to be exciting.

  4. I hate when the weather guys don't get the memo. It's bad enough being someplace so distasteful, but at least can't the weather be pleasant?

  5. I'd leave out the rosebud--rather doubt she's thinking about that at the moment. (Unless you want to tie it to the unseasonably cold weather.)

  6. Hm, I wonder what Jax would do if she came across or was confronted with the disgusting kind of crime. ;)

  7. I can see this is not written about MY university town. Jax could retire here.

  8. I like the characterization of the weather. It sounds like a jerk.

    1. Haha! Thanks!! Yeh, you'd think by the time we live in the 24th Century, Weather Control would've gotten out all the kinks, right?

  9. This paints a clear picture of the world and the character. I always thought omniscient POVs were always cool because of that. You use it well here. Got a great sense of this story.

  10. Ooh, love this. Always enjoy futuristic/otherworldly street scenes for a reason I'm not quite sure of. Where exactly is she? On Earth? Another planet?

    Wonderful snippet!

    1. She's on Earth. I didn't bother to say where, or which city. Just, plain old, Earth with faulty Weather Control. :)
