SFFSat - July 13

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday (SFFSat) is a place where a bunch of us post snippets from our written works and also shoot the breeze a little. And before I get ahead of myself, thanks and appreciation as always to those who stop by and leave fantastic comments.

So, where were we?
Oh, yes. Last week, our heroine and her bumbling partner, Mason, discovered the creature chasing them was not a dinosaur, but a dragon! Today, we have them running helter skelter for cover...

A little preamble for those who don't know: Two characters on an old 'ship' (undecided if to make it a space ship or a ship-ship) that looked like it originated from the 1960s. One sees a 'dinosaur', almost poops his pants, then both characters make a run for it...
You can catch the previous ones:
Part 1: here.
Part 2: here.
Part 3: here.
Part 4: here.

And now for this week...after diving for cover, our heroine has but a brief moment to survey the threat...

I yanked Mason and scrambled to safety. We careened around the consoles on the bridge, and dived behind a solid-looking counter, hot lashes slapped against our backs. As we tumbled along the floor, tucking as much of our bodies as we could behind the counter, a rush of smoke and flames blasted by. The stench of sulfur and something pretty close to rot assaulted our senses.
From next to me, Mason screamed. He had his hands clenched around his ears and his inability to move was my motivation to surge to my feet, dragging him with me as best I could. I yelled out his name, ordering him to move. He responded like a robot, with fear making his eyes goggle and his mouth curve downward. We ran out of the bridge to the sound of the beast in pursuit, its huge body slammed clumsily around the room to a cacophony of noise.

  1. Come on, Mason! Now's not the time to go fetal. On your feet! Run!

  3. All humans have the "fight, flight, or freeze" reaction in dire situations. It appears that Mason has "freeze", just like a rabbit. He should trade that in for "flight". At least The Doctor has that trait.

    1. So true! And I think it's safe to say, that if I were in that situation, I would be freezing like Mason!

  4. Cool turn this week. It morphed from a more absurd kinda situation to a "hey this could really go bad" The visual is still surreal but the danger is not. Nice.

  5. I hope that's metal the dragon's bouncing around. Wood (like an old-time sailing ship) could burn.

  6. Eek! Where to escape a dragon on a ship? Not the crow's nest! (I'm still envisioning a ship-ship.)

  7. His partner is forgiving, because I'd have already slapped Mason and given him the ultimatum: get it together or get left, because you're going to get us both killed. Great action and details!

  10. For some reason, this has me remembering Toothless bouncing around Hiccup's cabin at the end of the film, but in a less friendly way, lol. Good visuals.
