SFFSat - July 20
Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday (SFFSat) is a place where a bunch of us post snippets from our written works and also shoot the breeze a little. And before I get ahead of myself, thanks and appreciation as always to those who stop by and leave fantastic comments.
The word prompt is SUN. For the snippet, I thought to share with you the beginnings of a brand new Jax Marlin novella. For those who don't know, Jax is a particular favourite of mine. I mean, who doesn't love a sexy vigilante who gets up to no good, right?
The overhead incandescent light beamed down in the small cubicle, heating her head like an unrelenting sun.
Bugger
this.
Jax Marlin tipped her head left and
right, inspecting the blossoming bruises forming on her cheek and jawline. It
had been a while since she’d gotten herself hammered in a fistfight. But that
security bot had been particularly crafty. It seemed someone had gone to the
exacting trouble of uploading it with several new fight moves. Jax made a
mental note to make sure she upgraded herself. She would not be caught
unawares again—ever.
With a final glance at her reflection,
Jax gave herself a wink and left the small confines of the orbiter shuttle’s
lavatory.
Cheers!

Oh, yes. Last week, our heroine and her bumbling partner, Mason, discovered the creature chasing them was not a dinosaur, but a dragon! Today, we have them running helter skelter for cover...
A little preamble for those who don't know: Two characters on an old 'ship' (undecided if to make it a space ship or a ship-ship) that looked like it originated from the 1960s. One sees a 'dinosaur', almost poops his pants, then both characters make a run for it...
You can catch the previous ones:
Part 1: here.
Part 2: here.
Part 3: here.
Part 4: here.
And now for this week...after diving for cover, our heroine has but a brief moment to survey the threat...
I yanked
Mason and scrambled to safety. We careened around the consoles on the bridge,
and dived behind a solid-looking counter, hot lashes slapped against our backs.
As we tumbled along the floor, tucking as much of our bodies as we could behind
the counter, a rush of smoke and flames blasted by. The stench of sulfur and
something pretty close to rot assaulted our senses.
From next to me, Mason screamed. He had his
hands clenched around his ears and his inability to move was my motivation to
surge to my feet, dragging him with me as best I could. I yelled out his name,
ordering him to move. He responded like a robot, with fear making his eyes
goggle and his mouth curve downward. We ran out of the bridge to the sound of
the beast in pursuit, its huge body slammed clumsily around the room to a
cacophony of noise.
Cheers!

T-Rex-spinosaurus-carnotaurus...
Why was
I spewing out grade school science stuff?
It
reared back its head, as if to chomp down on us. It inhaled instead, its mouth
cracked open wider and sucked in a phlegmy rasp.
So many teeth!
“We
should…we should run. Now!” I jabbed my elbow into Mason, scuttling backwards
with my eyes riveted to the creature.
It
brought its head down and on an ear-shattering roar, a blast of fire spewed from its mouth.
“Dragon!”
Cheers!
